I wanted to watch a Christmas movie my mom loves: A Christmas Carol, the movie that came out in 1938 that starred Reginald Owen. I spotted the movie on the streaming service Max and called my mom to tell her. I could hear her inner fangirl scream excitedly, but her spirit was crushed when I mentioned it was streaming. She doesn’t have a streaming service. Her only access was while I lived with her, and I brought internet and streaming services.

Where have you been if you’re unfamiliar with the book, written in 1843 by Charles Dickens, or every movie incarnation since 1938? For those who don’t know the story, a miser by the name of Ebenezer Scrooge is a cheap and greedy old man that gets visited by four spirits: his old partner, Jacob Marley, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet-to-Come. He is then shown what was, what’s going on now, and what’ll happen if he doesn’t change his ways for the better. I don’t want to give it away, but either read the book or watch the many variations of the movie, the message is the same.

I watched the movie in black and white because that’s where the movie was shot. Back then, Hollywood had a tight leash on their actors, depending on their studio. I didn’t dive too deeply into that detail, but I did see a YouTube video showcasing the grave marker prop in a cemetery in England for the movie, and it was never removed after the movie wrapped. I enjoyed seeing how Scrooge slowly became the man we see in the movie and how he had an epiphany in the end. Like I said above, read and/or watch the movie for yourself to see what he does.

A few of the more popular versions of the movie were made in 1951 starring Alastair Sim, an eighties version starring Bill Murray called Scrooged, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, The Muppets Christmas Carol, a version starring Jim Carrey, and last but not least, a Rankin/Bass version called The Stingiest Man in Town.

Want to know my favorite version of A Christmas Carol? It’s a tie between the version with Mickey Mouse and The Muppets.

That’s it for now. I’ll see you in the next post!
